Greeting from the Principal

Living the present moment united with one another; together we open the doors to the future. It was in 1950, five years after the tragedy of the atomic bomb, that Notre Dame Seishin Junior and Senior High School was founded. During this period of post-war reconstruction, the people of Hiroshima desired both peace and education. This spirit strongly influenced the foundation of our school and is clearly still active today. Moreover, the era of our founder, St. Julie Billiart had similar hopes and dreams — St Julie being a strong promoter of education in the period following the French Revolution more that 200 years ago, and Julie’s inspiration was Jesus Christ, from whose mother our school gets its name, Notre Dame (Our Lady –the Virgin Mary).

In these extraordinary days, in order to “protect all life”, we are limiting direct “contact” that has always been cherished at our school, and we have spent the year testing out different ways to have daily lessons, school events, and the myriad activities that make up school life. These efforts have been carried out thanks to the support and careful planning of many people, and our students have demonstrated their creativity and ability to adjust.

There has been so much ingenuity involved in planning gatherings at which participants cannot meet in one place, in creating recordings and editing, so that certain events could be broadcast to the student body in their classrooms, also ways to make announcements of events and projects through online platforms have developed. In all this, we all are discovering new possibilities and empathy.

While making full use of information technology in this way, the library also hit an all-time high for books loaned out: clearly, our students are learning independently and have high aspirations for building a sustainable society and exploring new ways of life. May we grow from the seeds sown in this new era, through the joy of everyday life and collaborative work, and sometimes through shared hardships, into a diverse and abundant tree of love.

As stated in the Bible, “Knock on the gate, and it will be opened for you” (Matthew 7: 8), Notre Dame Seishin will take advantage of this year’s experiences. We will strive to be a school that shines with the light of hope based on our relationships with one another. Let’s open the doors to the future together.
